Southern Boone Cheer is turning the historic rivalry between the University of Missouri and the University of Kansas into a spirited fundraiser supporting the cheerleading program’s journey to Nationals.
The MU vs. KU Flag Fundraiser began Friday, September 4th, with a KU flag flying next to Central Bank on Broadway in Ashland. Donations made in support of MU will help lower the KU flag and raise the MU flag. Donations supporting KU will help keep the KU flag flying or bring it back down if MU takes the lead.
“This fundraiser is a fun way to bring our community together through one of the biggest rivalries in college athletics,” Southern Boone Head Cheer Coach Lindsay Morris said. “Whether you cheer for Mizzou or KU, every donation supports our cheerleaders and helps them move closer to their goal of competing at Nationals.”
The fundraiser will track donations for each team through Friday, September 11. Because donations work in opposite directions, the flag flying will be determined by the difference between the MU and KU totals. For example, if MU supporters donate $500 and KU supporters donate $250, MU would hold a $250 advantage in the flag challenge.
A portion of the fundraiser’s proceeds will also be donated to MizzouThon, which supports children and families receiving care at MU Health Care’s Children’s Hospital in Columbia
“We are especially proud that this fundraiser gives our athletes an opportunity to support another meaningful cause,” Morris said. “Our cheerleaders understand that representing Southern Boone is about more than competition. It is also about serving others and making a positive difference.”
Community members can donate online at https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/cheer-sb-rivalry-flag-fundraiser. Donors can select an amount and indicate whether they are supporting MU or KU.
Cash and check donations will also be accepted at Southern Boone’s varsity game on September 4, junior varsity game on September 7 and varsity game on September 11. Donations may also be deposited into the Cheer SB account at any Central Bank location. Checks should be payable to Cheer SB, with “Go MU” or “Go KU” written on the deposit slip or memo line to ensure the correct team receives credit.
“Every contribution matters, regardless of which team you support,” Morris said. “We hope the community will have fun with the challenge while helping our cheerleaders represent Southern Boone on the national stage.”
