Winter Weather Information

The safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority and drives all of our decisions when it comes to inclement weather. The district will use different methods of communication to share important information with our families and the community.

When a decision is made due to inclement weather to cancel school, run bus snow routes or dismiss school early, there are a variety of methods of communication that the district will use to notify parents, families and the community.

Different Methods of Communication

It is important for families to have multiple ways to receive information and important announcements from the school district.

When a decision is made about school, communication will be sent out before 10 p.m. the night before or in the morning after 5 a.m. We will make every effort to provide cancellation notices to our families as early as possible. We hope these times will serve to inform you while accommodating your schedules.

Snow Days / AMI Days

The school district has used all six snow days that were built into the 2023-2024 district calendar. Below is a recap of the snow days that have been used this school year.

Snow Day #1: January 9th, 2024
Snow Day #2: January 10th, 2024
Snow Day #3: January 12th, 2024
Snow Day #4: January 16th, 2024
Snow Day #5: January 22nd, 2024
Snow Day #6: January 23rd, 2024

The district has the option of using five Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) or virtual learning days this school year. As we continue through the rest of winter, any additional days of no school will be AMI Days instead of traditional snow days for students. Additional information about AMI Days will be shared by the school district and building principals.

Snow Day: Making the Decision

One of the hardest decisions a school superintendent makes is whether or not to call off school due to weather. There are multiple factors that determine the decision, but it comes down to an informed, subjective judgment call. Though it might seem like a simple task, we have a process followed each time the threat of inclement weather is imminent.

Considerations prior to closing school:

  • Road conditions, both main roads and secondary roads

  • Bus stop safety

  • Buses running on time, delays

  • Bus turnarounds, likelihood of accident or breakdowns

  • Temperatures

  • Forecast

  • Timing of precipitation

  • Condition of school building bus and parking lots at the time of arrival or dismissal

The school district consults with the following departments and offices:

  • School district’s transportation department

  • Boone County Office of Emergency Management

  • National Weather Service Office in St. Louis

  • Neighboring school superintendents

  • State, county, and city road departments
